What is PBIS?
PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) is a behavioral framework to support positive behaviors for all students in every area of the school. The areas of the school include the classroom, specials, hallway, bus, bathroom, playground, and lunchroom. This is a whole student approach put in place to improve academic and social behaviors in all settings.
Teachers and staff have the responsibility to clearly communicate and enforce student’s behavior in a fair, consistent, and supportive manner.
Armstrong utilizes a school wide behavior matrix. Under the three categories of Be Safe, be Respectful, and Be Responsible. These behaviors are reinforced using the Armstrong Stamp Card system. Students can redeem these cards in the Armstrong School Store
Cool tools are mini-lessons that teach and re-teach positive behaviors in different school settings throughout the year.
Levels of Support
Tier I/Universal supports include teaching our three overall expectations (Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe). The school matrix and weekly lessons are used to reinforce our expectations in all settings at Armstrong.
Tier II/Secondary provides an additional layer of support for students not responding to school-wide (Tier 1) instruction. Check-in/Check-Out (CICO) allows students to receive positive feedback throughout their day and have the expectations reviewed. Some students will also have the opportunity to practice these skills in small groups.
Tier III/Tertiary supports students who have not been successful with Tier I and Tier II supports. Students will receive highly individualized supports from a team made up of family and school staff. These students will continue to be supported by Tier I and Tier II interventions.
SWAT
SWAT is a problem solving strategy that we encourage our students to uses when engaged in a Student-to-Student conflict. SWAT stands for Stop, Walk Away, and Talk.
Skill 1 is to say, “Stop!” using a clear, calm voice.
Skill 2 is to go to a different part of the room or play area.
Skill 3 is to talk to an adult.
Learning to solve problems with others improves coping and communication skills. It is an important part of social interaction for all people.
School Wide Meetings
School wide meetings spotlight academic and social celebrations throughout the school. This is a special opportunity to recognize students’ hard work and commitment to Armstrong’s PBIS expectations.
This is an opportunity to show how classes have worked together accomplishing small celebrations that will then ripple through the school igniting excitement for all!
Students are also earning small classroom celebrations for full classroom stamp cards.
