Gotta Dance!

Posted Sunday, March 4th, 2012 by Judy Meyer Hays

During our ISAT testing weeks, all students in 1st through 6th grade will be participating in DANCE classes rather than their regular PE and Music classes!

Dancing of one kind or another is present in every culture around the world.  As one of the four Fine Arts, it is valued by the State of Illinois and included in the current state standards.  The Fine Arts (Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Art) are considered a core curricular subject equal in importance to Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Math.  These dance lessons are based on our school district’s dance curriculum and will focus on dance performance vocabulary, movement skills and make historical and multicultural connections.

Each lesson will have a different dance concept focus:
Lesson 1:  Personal and Group Space
Lesson 2:  Locomotor and Nonlocomotor Movement
Lesson 3:  Body Awareness and Level
Lesson 4:  Shape
Lesson 5:  Direction and Body Facing
Lesson 6:  Quality of Movement
Lesson 7:  Choreography and Improvisation
Lesson 8:  Review

Now….SING ALONG!

TEST TAKING TIPS     Sung to “Give My Regards to Broadway”

ISATs are here—don’t worry.
Here are tips that you can use.
Read all the questions carefully,
Then read the text before you choose.

Determine the main idea
Finding details that support is grand
Read all the choices carefully
So you’re sure you understand

 Tips cheered during the interlude:

Edit! Edit!  Don’t forget it!
Don’t spend too much time on one—move along and you’ll get done.
Relax—don’t get stressed—you’ll do better on the test.
You can do it—yes you can—you should be your biggest fan!

If you need to define a word meaning,
Substitute each answer on the line
Listen for which one sounds the best
Choose that and you’ll be fine.

Notice the sequence of the text
And highlight what the main points are
Think before you write then check your work
And when you test you’ll be a star!
